Each week, join Chris Nix, Siddy Holloway and Laura Hilton-Brown from the Museum’s Hidden London team and host Alex Grundon as they explore the secret and mysterious spaces of London’s transport system. In series 1, the team focus on the different sites in the Hidden London tour programme, sharing historical titbits that are revealed on the tours as well as the behind the scenes processes they go through to make the tours such as success. In series 2 and 3, the team turn their hands to a huge number of various transport topics such as moquette, tiling, Johnston type face, posters and much, much more!

  1. E1. Sign on the Line

    In this episode the team start the new series with an epic trip to discover how enamel signs are made, with exclusive access behind the scenes at AJ Wells’ factory on the Isle of Wight. We see all aspects of fabrication, try our hand at screen printing and follow the creation of a roundel and new signage for the renaming of Overground lines.

    In the first of a bumper two-parter episode, the team hitch a ride on a battery locomotive as it weaves its way across the network deep into the night, learning about the specialist kit it carries to perform a challenging but rewarding job. Chris Nix, Laura Hilton Brown and Alex Grundon meet the crew who drive and coordinate these rarely spotted vehicles, and the team gets an exclusive front-seat view of a stretch of London’s Underground that you won’t see on any regular commute.

The team explore the disused former Great Northern and City Railway station at Highbury & Islington, discovering how it still sits at the heart of the present day station and it’s ingenious reuse to serve contemporary customer needs. The episode includes a mix of panel discussion in our Cubic Theatre and exploration footage shot on site at Highbury & Islington.
